COMPETITION TEAMS
and CLASSES

Competition Teams

The Brookfield Dance Academy Competition Teams are developed to create a positive environment where young dancers can grow as performers and teammates, as well as increase their self-esteem, self-discipline, and pride in their accomplishments.

Competition team members will improve their dance technique, become more precise and enthusiastic, and learn how to be responsible team members. At BDA we value the process, not just the reward at the end, and we encourage our dancers to appreciate all accomplishments, no matter how small. The process will help dancers learn to respect others and themselves and boost their self-confidence.

At Brookfield Dance Academy we view competition as a learning tool. The advantage of competition is that it gives the dancers specific goals and a set time frame to accomplish those goals. Competition Teams will be the face of Brookfield Dance Academy. These dancers will perform in the community, charity events and compete from the local to the National level.

We believe that members of our competition teams not only grow as dancers but also grow as individuals. We spend a great deal of time on teambuilding, leadership building and goal setting. We feel that learning how to cooperate on a team is a lifelong skill that we hold as the highest importance of being on our teams.

Teams are for ages 5  & up and are on an audition basis.  Dancers compete from the local to the National.  All team members are required to attend 2 rehearsals + 1 ballet class/week.

Musical Theatre Camp - 6 weeks (Ages 9 - 15)

In this total immersion musical theater camp, participants live rock theater hands-on every day with daily expert instruction in acting, voice and dance. Musical and scene selections are chosen to provide each camper with the best opportunity to grow and shine, and each part is a thread which becomes interwoven into one fantastic event finale at the end of 6 weeks of training and rehearsals. Kids and teens collaborate with 3 of our theater and music professionals as a team to shape the overall script, which the cast begins improvising and improving on our very first day together. Students will be divided into age groups to complete different components of the show. There is also plenty of chance for participants to get a satisfying taste of behind-the-scenes activity – in stage management, writing, set, light, and sound design. During the final week of camp we ramp up into a full pre-production schedule to tighten up the collaborative musical theater experience we will present. Our production will review rock history from the 1960's through today, and it will brilliantly show off the unique talents and skills of each camper and highlight the special, creative input each of them has brought to our summer's work.  All ability levels are welcome; space is limited.

In Europe and Russia the study of “Character Dance” is considered an intrinsic part of Classical Ballet training.  This class will include an introduction to authentic Character barre and center in the Russian, Hungarian and Spanish styles with an exciting variety of traditional turns, port de bras, épaulement and footwork. • The importance of alignment of the feet, ankles and knees
• Finding your “center” and increasing core stability
• Heightening awareness and critical thinking in personal accuracy of whole body alignment
• Safely increasing extensions

• Understanding turn-out
• Origins of Port de bras (carriage of the arms) and head /eye coordination
• The crucial difference between a warm-up and a stretch

Introduction to RUSSIAN CLASSICAL BALLET (Ages 7 - 18)

This class is for students who are interested in enrolling in our Russian Ballet Program during the regular school year. Based on the Vaganova Teaching Method, this program is for the serious dance student who is ready for the challenge to pursue the discipline and personal perfection that true Classical Ballet training can afford. Russian Teaching Method of Classical ballet is a true Fine Art form and not just a style of dance. The method of instruction is based on an actual pedagogical curriculum working from a graded syllabus. Russian Method Classical training teaches the students to use their bodies “from the inside out” achieving remarkable results through slow, progressive work. ALL dance levels will begin at the beginning level and progress accordingly. We will begin with each level meeting 2 times per week as this will help to instill progressive muscle memory and visible results while keeping to realistic goals. A graded syllabus will be provided. Every student will be required to learn the French terminology of the entire syllabus for their level and will only pass to the next level upon successful completion of an end of year exam. These exams are both fun as well as challenging and every committed student will be given the chance to succeed.  Breakdown of lesson content:
A) Floor barre: A series of floor exercises which encourages correct whole body alignment and accurate use of muscles.
B) Barre-work: All students face the barre for the first 8 weeks of lessons in order to instill accuracy in whole body alignment, timing and precision of execution of movements. As progress is made we will then practice the exercises with one hand on the barre using all épaulement.
C) Center Barre: Just as it indicates, these are the barre exercises practiced with “no hands” to further develop “aplomb” (stability through movement), Points of the stage, positions of the body, all épaulement, hand training and “Port de Bras”.
D) Jumps and turns: All jumps and turns are learned first at the barre to ensure accurate body alignment and musical timing, and then taken into the center where they are learned with épaulement.
E) Character Dance: Russian, Hungarian, Moldavian, Gypsy, Spanish and Oriental Character dance as presented in such ballets as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Coppelia will be introduced as part of the curriculum.
F) Guided Stretching: Cool down and guided stretching to increase range of motion will be taught with a focus on injury prevention.

Session Dates:  July 16th - August 23rd
Days:  Tuesdays and Thursdays
Time:  3:00 - 4:30 pm
Fee:  $260
